Los Clemson Tigers se coronaron en la final del Campeonato Nacional de fútbol americano universitario por tercera vez en su historia (1981, 2016, 2018). Como hace dos años, volvieron a derrotar al ogro que domina la última década en la NCAA college, Alabama Crimson Tide, y esta vez con demasiada autoridad (44-16).
Lo hicieron destacando jugadores novatos que han maravillado a todo el universo del football. El quarterback Trevor Lawrence resultó ser el MVP de esta final disputada en el Levi's Stadium, con unos números escandalosos: 347 yardas en 20/32 lanzamientos, con 3 pases de touchdown y 0 intercepciones. No se puso nada nervioso ante la tremenda defensa de Alabama que anduvo desaparecida esta vez.
También cabe destacar la labor de dos receptores explosivos como Tee Higgins (con 3 capturas se recorrió 81 yardas) y Justyn Ross (153 yardas en 7 recepciones), quienes anotaron un touchdown cada uno, así como el running back Travis Ettiene. El sophomore de 19 años corrió 14 veces para 82 yardas y aportó dos anotaciones terrestres, añadiendo además un touchdown aéreo de 5 yardas.
Por su parte, el grupo defensivo de Clemson también se comportó y dio la talla. Antes de que el ataque explotara por medio de Lawrence y compañía, la línea secundaria se reivindicó y se unió a la gran calidad de su front-seven para ser la pesadilla de Tua Tagovailoa.
Tanto Mullen como Terrell interceptaron en la primera parte al QB de Alabama, incluso Terrell acabó con pick six en el primer drive de su rival, y fue cómo mantuvieron el pulso a los de Nick Saban en los únicos minutos en los que su ofensiva pudo disfrutar de puntos, con touchdowns de Jeudy (139 yardas en 5 recepciones) y Hentges, y un field goal de Bulovas en el segundo cuarto.
Sin embargo, tras el descanso (31-16), Clemson puso la directa con 13 puntos más y convirtieron el último cuarto en un mero trámite hacia la victoria de los de Dabo Swinney. De hecho Tagovailoa se sentó y los minutos finales los tuvo que disputar Jalen Hurts.
